Sunnyside Restaurant & Lodge is one of those Lake Tahoe originals that feels instantly familiar, even on your first visit. Sitting right on the West Shore near Tahoe City, it’s been a Tahoe landmark since the 1950s and a go-to gathering place for both locals and visitors.
Part of what makes Sunnyside so beloved is its real history. The property began as a summer home dating back to 1908, then was converted into a small seven-room lodge with a marina in 1946. Over time it evolved into the lively lakefront hub people know today, with renovations focused on keeping those panoramic lake and mountain views front and center.
In the warmer months, Sunnyside’s huge lakefront deck becomes the main event. The resort calls it the largest on Lake Tahoe, and it’s famous for that sunny, come-as-you-are vibe where people arrive by car, bike, or boat and stay a while. The food matches the setting too, with crowd favorites like their fried zucchini and classic cocktails that just feel right after a day on the water.
And yes, you can’t talk about Sunnyside without mentioning the Hula Pie. It’s a towering dessert built with macadamia nut ice cream on a chocolate cookie crust, layered with chocolate fudge, finished with whipped cream, hot fudge, and toasted macadamia nuts.
