2014 The American Century Championship

The American Century Championship is the most respected celebrity golf tournament that is held in the 2nd week of July at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. Established in 1990, the event presents a unique opportunity for the public to get closer to renowned celebrities. This made-for-TV event, hosted by NBC Sports, is a 54-hole modified Stableford format that has attracted some of the biggest names in the world of sports and entertainment. With $600K in prize money at stake, these players are in it to win it! Over ver the years the tournament has featured more than 80 sports and entertainment stars. Some of the biggest names to grace this event include Dale Jarrett, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and Ray Romano.

2014 will mark the 25th anniversary of this championship and sponsored by the American Century Investments, while many local and national charities have benefited largely from this event. This year American Century Championships will live up to its reputation by naming the Stowers Institute of Medical Research as its official beneficiary.

History of the tournament

The event made its debut in 1990 and won by Mark Rypien. American Century Investments stepped in 1999 as the lead sponsor of the event. Earlier the tournament used a stroke play format but it changed to Stableford (modified) format in 2004. Rick Rhoden and Dan Quinn have won the tournament a maximum number of times with eight and five title wins, respectively. Noted actor Jack Wagner is the only non-professional to win this event in 2006 and 2011.

Defending champion Billy Joe Tolliver secured his fourth title recently and pocketed a cool $125,000 in prize money. Mark Rypien was the runners-up.

2014 Tournament Fact file

When: July 15 – 20, 2014. Practice rounds are scheduled for Wednesday and the American Century Celeb-Am Tournament is slated for Thursday. The main event, The American Century Championship, is scheduled to be held from Friday to Sunday.

Who: Close to 70 – 80 biggest names in the field of sports and entertainment. This year the tournament is expecting celebrities like Jerry Rice, John Elway, Aaron Rodgers and Charles Barkley.
