South Lake Tahoe
Difficulty:
Beginner
Distance: 6 1/2 miles
This
is South Lake Tahoes' premier paved bike trail and is
suitable for all abilities and ages. It meanders through
Forest Service land for 4.5 miles of mostly flat terrain.
This trail begins 4 1/2 miles north of the Hwy. 50/Hwy.
89 intersection (the "Y") and ends at Spring Creek Road.
Points of interest along the way include: Access to
several of south shores nicest beaches including Pope,
Kiva and Baldwin beaches. Historic Camp Richardson with
it's quaint hotel, bike rentals, general store, deli
and beach-side restaurant (the Beacon) which in the
summer months offers live music on the deck. Just west
lies the Tallac Historic Site
with it's turn-of-the-century estates and museum. A
little further west lies the Forest Service Visitors
center with it's self-guided interpretive trail (no
bikes on this short nature walk) and the Stream Profile
Chamber which gives one a fisheye view of Taylor creek.
Special note of interest: In early/mid October the annual
kokanee salmon spawn occurs in Taylor Creek and the
bike path and stream profile chamber offer excellent
viewing of this ancient, natural phenomenon. See map
for details.
